Tristram is the prince of Lyonesse, though for much of his life, he has called Cornwall his home. King Mark, Tristram's uncle, raised him after his mother's death. As he grew, Tristram became the best knight of his uncle's court, and some considered him to be the best knight that wasn't of the Order of the Round Table. After being stabbed with a poisoned spear by Morholt, an Irish knight and brother to the Irish Queen, Tristram travels to Ireland in search of an antidote. He ends up being cared for, and eventually cured, by Isolde, the niece of Morholt.

Tristram returns to Cornwall speaking of a beautiful woman who saved him. Mark grew jealous of his nephew, and sent Tristram back to Ireland to bring back Isolde, in order for Mark to marry her. Tristram dutifully obeys, despite his own love for Isolde. Once she agrees to go to marry King Mark, she returns to Cornwall with Tristam. On the trip back, He finds a bottle of what he thinks is wine, and shares some with Isolde. The two fall madly in love with each other, and Isolde realizes that Tristram mistook a love potion intended for her and Mark, by her mother, Iseult of Ireland. Thus, Tristram and Isolde become, and continue to be, despite her marriage to Mark, lovers. When Mark finds out, he banishes Tristram; who becomes a Knight of the Round Table. During his banishment, Tristram marries Iseult of the White Hands in an atempt to get over his love for Isolde, but it doesn't help, and Tristram can never bring himself to consummate the marriage.
