Excalibur, sometimes known as Caliburn, is [[Arthur]]'s legendary sword. It was originally given to his father, Uther Pendagon, by the [[Lady of the Lake]]. Upon the king's death, Merlin places the Excalibur in the stone, prophesying that "the rightful king of all Briton shall be the only one to draw forth the sword from the stone".
When Arthur does draw the sword from the stone, and is revealed as the son and heir of Uther Pendragon, Excalibur serves as both a symbol of Arthur's right to be king and his power as king. The sword is not just a symbol though, it is an extremely well-made magic sword from the realm of Avalon; any wound Excalibur makes will mortally wound a person.
