Drawn from the stone to name Arthur the son of Uther Pendragon, and the rightful King of all England; Excalibur serves as a symbol of Arthur's right to be king and his power as king. The sword is not just a symbol though, it is an extremely well-made magic sword from the realm of Avalon. It is said that any wound Excalibur makes will mortally wound a person.
