This is the axe of Bertilak, which was given to Gawain to strike him with a blow that Bertilak would return in a year. Gawain decided to attempt to behead Bertilak, reasoning that a dead man can't return a blow. After his beheading, Bertilak still lived, and gave his axe to Gawain.
